So long Les Paul [14 Aug 2009|02:43am]

electric guitar gets run over by a car on the highway
this is a crime against the state
this is the meaning of life.

to tune this electric guitar

an electric guitar is brought in to a court of law
the judge and the jury (twelve members of the jury)
all listening to records
this is a crime against the state
this is the verdict they reach:

never listen to electric guitar

electric guitar is copies, the copy sounds better
call this the law of justice, call this freedom and liberty
i thought I perjure myself, right infront of the jury!
is this a crime against the state? no!
this is the verdict they reach:

someone controls electric guitar.

_@_v - gee dave if you care so much about this country why not take the oath already? [05 Nov 2008|04:01am]

Start Making Sense
Posted by Lileks on Nov 4, 2008

I got an email from David Byrne. Since I signed up to get a free MP3 from his website, this means I am automatically simpatico to the portions of his worldview that do not involve moving fingers across the surfaces of strings and keys, and hence am eager to hear from him.
Pardon the bulk mailing. I Can’t Vote. I am an immigrant with a Green Card and, therefore, I am not eligible to vote in a federal election.

Pardon the bulk mauling, David, but I Can’t Care. You’re a fifty-six year old man who’s been in the country since 1960.  Take the citizenship test already. It’s easy. No questions like “My God. What have I done?

FYI - I can get drafted (luckily, Daniel Berrigan burned my draft board’s records) and I pay taxes, yet I cannot vote for President.

You can get drafted if there is a draft, and they change the rules to hoover up the geezers,  but otherwise, relax. As for paying your taxes yet being unable to vote for President, well, sorry, but we call that citizenship. Just because someone goes to France and buys a candy bar doesn’t mean their VAT contribution enables them to have a voice in EU policy.

On Election Day, I see my neighbors heading to the nearby elementary school to cast their ballots. The voting booth joint is a great leveler; the whole neighborhood - rich, poor, old, young, decrepit and spunky - they all turn out in one day.

True, and that’s nice.
But most of you can vote. What can I say? The Republicans have made us less safe than before 9/11

Says the man writing from a city that hasn’t been hit since  . . . oh, the date slips my mind. Nine – one – something or other.

started an illegal war they can’t - and don’t intend to - finish, removed what sympathy (after 9/11) and respect the world had for the US, and have robbed US citizens of many of their basic rights. Global warming? What’s that? Science and education? Investment in our future? No, thanks - we’ll stick with a good ‘ole hockey mom. Ignorant, and f*cking proud of it, as is always the case.

(Asterisk added to keep the site from being banned for naughty language.) Since Mr. Byrne is not ignorant and f*cking proud of it, as is always the case, he surely knows that Alaska has the high(est) total per capita spending on education, and New York is sixth. Alaska is ranked #10 in per capita higher ed spending; New York is # 46.  And if he thinks John McCain says “what’s that” to Global Warming, he might not have approached this election with an overabundance of facts
He continues:
Although it looks like a shoo-in, it ain’t over ’til Florida. And there are plenty of racists in this country who will vote against their own best interests.

Persuasive gentleman, isn’t he?  We need smarter, more informed racists! Mr. Byrne, I love your music and think you’re brilliant. I will be proud to call you a fellow citizen. See you at the voting booth next time! I’ll even spot you the mid-terms. Four years. Start studying! Hint: there are only 50 states. It looks like a trick question, but it’s not.

_@_v - needless to say i'm on lileks' side on this one. i especially love that leftist canard that we "removed what sympathy (after 9/11) and respect the world had for the US".

bullshit - the world never had any real respect for us americans. brutalitarian dictators like hugo chavez, robert mugabe and vladimir putin routinely get a free pass because all the problems in the world are america's fault because only america sins.

Icons (ha) and similar artists? [31 Jul 2008|09:01pm]

[ mood | bored ]

I ended up quickly making these because I really wanted a new TH icon and I haven't seen any around for ages.

1. 2. 3.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw these out there.

And actually, I have a question! I know they've influenced many, many bands but for the sake of comparision for someone who's never heard TH before, which bands/artists would you say were similar to Talking Heads? - modern day or contemporary or "inbetween."

Talking Heads sampler help! [18 Jul 2008|07:58pm]

[ mood | frustrated ]

Hmm, I know this community isn't very active, but I'll give this a try.

Question: If you were trying to introduce people to/entice others into appreciating Talking Heads, which songs would you be sure to include on a CD?

my too-long extremely preliminary tracklistCollapse )

As is probably clear I'm much too partial to Stop Making Sense, Little Creatures, and True Stories. Childhood nostalgia and a fondness for the poppier sound of things is clouding my judgment, so I was hoping that other TH fans could give some suggestions and opinions!

Please and thank you. :)

Mexican Grilled Chicken with Tomato Avocado Salsa [26 Jun 2008|10:07am]

Almost everyone loves Mexican food regardless of where they are from. Here is a Mexican recipe for grilled chicken that you can create in your own kitchen. This recipe is very easy to make and you can be sure that your friends and family will enjoy it.

Mexican Grilled Chicken with Tomato Avocado Salsa

Ingredients to serve 4 people:

4 boneless chicken breasts (leave the skin on)
2 large tomatoes
1 small red onion
1 peeled avocado
2 jalapeno peppers or 3 to 6 fresh serrano chili peppers (the more the spicier; start with 3)
3 cloves garlic, unpeeled
2 tbsp orange juice
1 tbsp lemon juice
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tbsp chopped cilantro
Olive oil for basting the chicken breasts

Cut the tomatoes and red onion into thick slices.
Cut the peppers in half and discard the seeds.

Put the garlic cloves and the tomato, onion, and pepper slices on the grill. Let these grill with the lid closed until the vegetables and peppers are charred and garlic skin comes off (about two minutes on each side).

Remove the vegetable, pepper and garlic from the grill and chop them up and mix well. Stir in the lemon and orange juice and season with salt and/or pepper (to desired taste).

Using half of this mixture spread it over the chicken breasts (be sure to rub it under the loose skin) and let it marinate for 1 hour at room temperature or up to four days refrigerated.

When you are ready to grill the chicken baste it with the olive oil and place it on a grill that has been preheated on high. Cook the chicken breasts until the juices are clear - about five minutes on each side.

While the chicken is grilling chop up the avocado and stir it into the remaining half of the vegetable, pepper and garlic mixture. Add the cilantro and stir everything well.

When your grilled chicken is cooked to your satisfaction remove it from the grill and cut it into one-half inch slices. Now serve it to your friends or family with the grilled tomato avocado salsa.

Remember that food safety is very important. You want your barbecue to be both fun and safe for everyone. Always be sure that you cook meat completely. Cut into the chicken breast at its thickest part, when they are completely cooked the juices will be clear and the meat will be white. Keep all utensils you use to handle the raw chicken separate from the ones you use to handle the cooked meat. Be sure to wash your hands after handling the raw chicken. Cross contamination of bacteria can be as risky to your health as eating raw meat.

Holy crap [01 Nov 2007|04:26pm]

Linda Stein just got beaten to death.

NEW YORK -- Linda Stein, a pioneer in New York's punk music scene who later became known as a real estate "broker to the stars," was beaten to death inside her Manhattan apartment, the medical examiner ruled.

Stein's daughter found her body Tuesday night face down in the living room of the Upper East Side apartment, where she lived alone. There were no signs of a break-in or robbery, and police said they had no motive or suspects.

An autopsy found that Stein, 62, died from blows to the head and neck, medical examiner spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said Wednesday.

Stein was the ex-wife of Seymour Stein, former president of Sire Records, which was the launching pad for the Ramones, Talking Heads and Madonna.

Psychic David! [15 Sep 2007|01:56pm]

David Byrne is so amazing! I was just listening to "Talking Heads '77," and I realized that he wrote a song about Live Journal, decades before it even existed! (In case any of my LJ friends should stumble upon this post, please note: it's not about any of you!)

I'm so glad I found this! [10 Sep 2007|05:10pm]

I love this music, but I feel somewhat alone in my principles as no one else I know seems to get it. My husband thinks I'm a complete freak. Now I feel less alone in the world.

A Couple of questions, if I may:

1) What do you guys think of the newer remix work he's doing with other artists? (Dj Madson and Paul van Dyk)

2) Does ANYONE know where I can get a copy of the married to the mob original motion picture soundtrack? David produced it, and it's as eclectic and fun as his music is and I cannot find it anywhere.

Sorry for rambling, but thanks for listening.

Yay for this community!
